Coughing – Causes, symptoms, and remedies
Coughing is a natural reflex action that helps clear the airways in the throat by getting rid of irritants, mucus, or foreign particles. When an irritant stimulates the nerves, a message is sent to the brain, directing the chest and abdomen muscles to expel air from the lungs and eliminate the irritant. Coughing can be caused by various factors like inhaling smoke or gas or consuming food and drinks improperly. Read on to learn about coughing.
  Causes of coughing
Coughing can be caused by a variety of factors. Here are some common causes of coughing.
  Respiratory infections
Coughing can be caused by common illnesses such as cold, sinus infections, bronchitis, and pneumonia. The body tries to clear the respiratory tract by expelling mucus and irritants in these cases.
  Allergies
Some people are prone to allergies and get affected by dust, pollens, pet dander, pollution, and other components. These irritants ultimately trigger coughing.
  Choking
Eating or drinking quickly can cause choking, eventually forcing the body to cough.
  Asthma
Coughing is a common symptom experienced by people of all ages who suffer from asthma, a respiratory health issue caused by inflammation and narrowing of the airways.
  Symptoms of coughing
Here are a few symptoms of coughing, which can be chronic.
  Dry and wet cough
Wet cough is also called productive or chest cough. This type of cough raises phlegm or mucus. Meanwhile, dry cough does not produce mucus.
  Shortness of breath
Shortness of breath can indicate that a patient suffers from chronic health problems. These health issues include anemia, asthma, and heart issues. This symptom makes a person feel tightness in their chest and breathlessness.
  Chest discomfort
Coughing may be accompanied by chest irritation, pain, or stiffness. This is caused by the irritation of the tissue lining the lungs and chest, which can cause discomfort in the chest area.
  Runny nose
This symptom occurs in response to any allergen or respiratory infection. A runny nose might trigger coughing. It is usually accompanied by other symptoms like breathlessness.
  Hoarseness
Frequent coughing can lead to a hoarse voice, especially if it is caused by an accumulation of phlegm. In such cases, it may be difficult to speak at all. To alleviate hoarseness, it is recommended to avoid excessive talking as it can exacerbate the condition.
  Wheezing
When a person experiences shortness of breath, they may also hear a specific noise while breathing caused by blocked airways. This noise, known as wheezing, typically occurs during exhalation rather than inhalation.
  Possible remedies for coughing
There are various remedies to stop coughing. Coughing can be stopped using prescription treatment or resting at home. Mentioned below are the remedies for treating coughing.
  Staying hydrated
Drinking warm fluids like water, soup, and broth helps to soothe muscles and relax the pain in the chest.
